In my painting the word “Artie” represents not only “Achieving Results Through Indigenous Education” but also pays tribute to proud Indigenous State of Origin Legend Arthur Beetson who has shown us all that through hard work and dedication anything is possible and this design is dedicated to the bright young students who will through hard work become tomorrow’s leaders in their chosen careers and also the many mentors involved in the A.R.T.I.E. program that inspire and encourage the students to succeed. The students and mentors are proud as they gather as one and unite to join hands and dance around their new friendship and goals which is A.R.T.I.E.

The top left of the painting represents our journey towards knowledge and a successful life from Prep, Primary school, High school, University, your career and your future. To reach your future and succeed you will be encouraged and inspired to be the best you can be which will be reflected by your attendance, effort, attitude, numeracy and literacy.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags surrounded by the rainbow serpent represent our link to our past and show everyone we are proud of who we are and the campfires throughout the painting represent our connection and respect for our elders, our culture and those who have come before us who sacrificed for our future.

The eagle represents the goals we set for ourselves as we aim high and know the sky is the limit and we are proud, positive and confident in ourselves as is the eagle and the handprint represents our reaching out to each other and the mentors and the new friendships that will empower us to do our best.

The tree represents us being proud of our heritage with the roots representing the strong foundations we are setting for ourselves through hard work. Inside the tree is the motivation that comes from within all of us with the weaved baskets, painted black bean pods and traditional symbols and rock art which connects us to our cultural identity and cultural knowledge.

The miners hat and circle represents the many jobs that are available to us all from teaching, childcare, health services, mining industry, infrastructure and information technology just to name a few with the light emanating from the miners hat representing the rural, remote and urban regions that we all come from and call home.

The black and white shaking hands represent our acceptance of each other and all Australians as equals regardless of race or color and the blue lines represent our commitment towards closing the gap between indigenous and non indigenous Australians.

The stepping stone circle represents the transitions and journeys we take in our lives with each accomplishment or stone making it easier to reach the next accomplishment, the circle starts when we start school and finishes when we have fulfilled our goals.

The football represents the Former Origin Greats, the mentors, the tutors and role models that all give their valuable time to teach us all that we can be the best that we can be and that life has no boundaries, with their encouragement and support we know that we too can be great in our chosen careers and excel in our own lives. The boomerang represents the past A.R.T.I.E. students that have returned to the A.R.T.I.E. program to help us all understand that through hard work anything is possible.

The hand represents giving back with the elder and young holding hands and the elder teaching us to be proud of who we are through tradition and stories and passing on over 40,000 years of history and culture to us. We show our respect to our elders and communities by being responsible, having ownership of choices and good habits for life which we then will pass onto our children.

The footprints and spirit trails link us all to each other, our culture, our history and our lands as we all continue to move forward. The bright colors represent the bright outlook on life we now have thanks to the A.R.T.I.E. program.
