Yaunaan Thuarra

This painting is called “Yaunaan Thuarra” which means in the Kalkadoon language “Big Flood”.

In my painting the whole canvas represents Kalkadoon country and when the wet season starts rain slowly begins to fall which is represented by the small dots in the centre, it is a welcome relief from the dry hot summer. The rain is relentless and continues to fall getting heavier and heavier with dry creek beds and rivers now overflowing and consuming the land which are represented by the strong tonal swirls. When the rain eventually stops there are only small deposits of land left above the waterline which is represented by the different shades of brown. Mother Nature is wise and knows that to continue life “Yaunaan Thuarra” must come.
