Waterholes - Kuukili

This painting is called “Kuukili” which means “Waterhole” in the Kalkadoon language.

In my painting the good spirit Kur-gun-yee brings the rain to Kalkadoon country, it falls relentlessly which is represented by the many small dots. The waterholes represented by the circles begin to fill and then overflow and also fill the next waterhole and so on until all of the Kuukili in Kalkadoon country are full and ready to sustain life once more.

During many visits on Country I paint the many waterholes that were shown to me by my elders as all being full after seeing them after the wet season. Some are a small trickle of water and some are bottomless lagoons that are all permanent Kuukili.
