Emu Dreaming - Utinat Ritjinguthinha

My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from Mount Isa in Queensland. This painting is called “Utinat Ritjinguthinha” in the Kalkadoon language which means “Emu Dreaming”.

The emu is a very special animal to my people, he has wandered Kalkadoon Country which is also known as the emu foot province since time began leaving a trail of feathers behind him.

His feathers have been used by my people for generations for warmth, clothing, headdresses for special ceremonies and decorations for tools and weapons.

The emu is the inspiration behind many special dances performed by my people, he not only walks across Kalkadoon Country but he also flies over it as the star constellation known as the emu in the sky.
