Medicine Leaves - Mirrithin Kungala

My name is Jesse Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland. This is my interpretation of “Mirrithin Kungala” which means in the Kalkadoon language “Medicine Leaves”.

For thousands and thousands of years the Kalkadoon people have used their extensive knowledge of the bush and used an assortment of leaves to aid in healing many ailments.

The leaves were either used fresh, dried out or used boiled in water and could treat and heal an abundance of sickness and sores from coughs and cold, burns, rheumatism, indigestion, toothache’s, cuts, ulcers, stomach aches and fevers to name a few.

One of my Elders once told me to look into the scrub and tell him what I saw and I replied “the bush” and he told me that what he saw was his supermarket full of food and medicines and all he needed to survive.
