To Hunt -Ngaimai

My name is Jesse Sutton and I am a contemporary indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland.

This painting is called “Ngaimai” which means “To Chase or To Hunt” in the Kalkadoon language.

The Kalkadoon people have ruled the emu foot province for at least the last 60,000 years and have been connected to their lands through their dreaming stories, songs and art. Hunting and gathering is an important part of Kalkadoon culture, while the women are hunting smaller wildlife the men are hunting larger game such as kangaroo’s and emu’s to provide food for their families.
